Having the Hard Conversations: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Image
by Dwight Bain, LMHC, NCC, & Certified Coach R ight now, you know a woman working at least two jobs, (not counting parenting children and running a household), who is married to an unmotivated man. It may be a co-worker, a sister, a neighbor or friend, but you know this woman. These women have a major problem, they believe they really love the guy on the couch who just can’t or won’t keep a job. This causes another major problem, because they don’t want their children to suffer or do without the basics, like new shoes, school supplies or playing little league. And so, they do the only thing they think they can do - they work, and work and then they work some more. Obviously not every man who is temporarily out of work is an unmotivated man who makes life miserable for his wife. In fact, a highly motivated man will always find something to do to support his family during tough times so his wife usually feels emotionally secure that he will provide for her and the kids. Change and Growth

Image
By Megan Brewer, LMHC           Change can be hard. “I hate change” seems to be a mantra for many as they face situations or seasons where what felt familiar is now foreign. Change can be hard because it requires us to adjust to something new and unfamiliar. That adjustment often feels very uncomfortable because it requires a lot of energy, even when it is a good change. If your life has held the heavy weight of chaos from past harm and wounding, change can be particularly disruptive.              Imagery can sometimes help us capture something of our experience that helps us make sense of what we feel and think. So, I will begin with a story that I hope will be helpful as we seek to navigate changes and transitions well.              I have always enjoyed plants and the ability to cultivate and help them grow. As I have moved through the process of raising plants, I regularly discover the way...

10 Benefits of Practicing Gratitude

Image
By: Brian Murray, LMHC, NCC Psalm 118:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Practicing gratitude and having a thankful heart has many benefits. Multiple studies show that gratitude helps our emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. Think of it this way, three parts of our life are a lot like a three-legged stool. If one of the legs is missing or out of balance the stool will fall over. This is a great metaphor to practice living our lives in a balanced way.   Gratitude is part of a positive psychology approach that has been shown to increase our immune capability, improve relationships and decrease anxiety and depression. This happens because of positive thoughts sending neurological signals to the brain that life is good. This does not mean that we look at the world through rose colored glasses, but to take some time each day to find something to be thankful for.   A good and easy way to start practicing gratitude is to start a ...
